Alpha Movie Review 2018

Family Review of the Movie Alpha 2018

Movie Details: 1hr 36min‎ – ‎Rated PG‎ 13

Admittedly, the preview looked good but this was not a movie I was that keen to see, but since there were limited movies on at the time, the kids decided it was the best choice.

The story-line might not have been completely original but the portrayal of it was none-the-less very good. I was nicely surprised how much I enjoyed this movie and it certainly did take you on a journey that was shared by both boy and wolf individually and co-jointly. At times I found this movie captivating. It’s hard not to fall in love with Alpha and you do have that understanding that Wolves too need to survive so are just doing what is natural.

It is a family friendly movie. The one thing I did find quite odd was a ritual that the clan performed on those who were ready to go hunting with those selected for the team.  I won’t go into details here as I don’t want to give too much away about the movie but you’ll know what I mean when you see it and I wasn’t happy with the concept and what it taught kids.

There are things to ponder about this movie that may mean it is more insightful  than what you see on the surface. Questioning such things as:

Are we all not an Alpha on the inside? A part of us that needs to survive but tended to in a loving and compassionate way? Are we all on our own journey regardless of the ‘clan’ or ‘family’ we are part of. Are we always seeking our way back home? Are we all our own worst enemy at times but need to learn how to adapt? Is it possible that we can be friends with the wild and independent side of us? Hmmmm…..what do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts and you can comment at the bottom of this post.

Is it worth watching Alpha Movie?

There was a nice little surprise at the end of the movie that was unexpected and it does have a feel good ending. It did not have the emotional roller coaster as a theme throughout this movie as is sometimes evident in other movies where they want to instill fear, sadness and laughter. It was a lot more balanced but you did identify with the character.

Kids Comments on Alpha The Movie

I took 2 teenagers along and one nearly teen. My youngest who is currently 11, said he felt it was a little slow in places but otherwise enjoyed this movie. My older 2 children (15 and 14 years) said they enjoyed it on the whole and we all started to think about our doggie at home as a result of this movie.

Overall, a much better movie than expected and I do recommend it as a family movie.

A Wrinkle in Time

March 30, 2018 By EB

This is our Opinion on A Wrinkle in Time Movie

A-Wrinkle-In-Time-Movie-ReviewFrom the moment I saw this as a preview on TV, I was very keen to see it and couldn’t wait for the release. Of course they timed the movie A Wrinkle in Time to come out right on school holidays, as they usually do with new kids movie releases. The great news though was that it was for kids, so that was an added bonus as we could make it a family day or night out. Read on to find out my review of A Wrinkle in Time movie.

The movie launched straight in. So much so that we did not realise that we were watching the start of the movie. We thought we were watching a preview to something else. So, we were embarrassed that we were having a little chat while we were waiting for what we thought was the movie to commence.

The premise of the movie was really good and the underlying message was good for kids and reminded me a little of ‘Avatar’ and how everything is connected. The direction of A Wrinkle in Time reminded me of The Golden Compass. I have to say I wasn’t impressed with the way the movie was put together and the kids did comment that it seemed cheap. Basically,  two very bright scientists (mother and father) want to connect with the universe. The father goes missing and leaves his wife and two kids. The daughter Meg, wants to find her father and her younger brother seems to manifest 3 strange women called ‘The Mrs’ who help them to try find their father.

The movie deals with bullying, compassion, trust, being happy with who you are and forgiveness. These are all woven into the fabric of the movie.

Age Appropriateness, Rating and Movie Length for A Wrinkle in Time

This is a pretty safe movie for about 10+ in  my opinion. There mother and father do kiss at one stage, there are a few scary scenes based on the landscape changing and fear concepts. Some little ones might find that a bit too frightening so whether you see this movie would be based on how well you know your child. Remember that young children’s minds cannot discern reality from fake as our minds view everything as real. As adults we can process that but little kids don’t have that ability and you don’t want your young child having nightmares.

The movie is rated PG and goes for approximately 109 Minutes (nearly 2 hours) but it doesn’t feel that long. I didn’t feel bored at any point.

Up the Noses in A Wrinkle in Time

The close ups they did of people were extrEMEly close up. I felt like, for most of the movie we were looking up the nostrils of everyone. The Dad didn’t have much of a part but when he did is was over dramatic and he severely let down his son and daughter, not so much in what happened at the start but more in what he does toward the end of the movie. Admittedly he is quite good looking and has lovely eyes but they just used him as an actor for his good impression of being sad.

Review of A Wrinkle in Time

There were some great appearances from Oprah, Reece Witherspoon and other familiar faces. The acting was believable. The story started well but felt disjointed in the middle. It had great potential to be a memorable, ‘go to’ movie but sadly, we all felt very let down. It is not a movie I would spend money on to see a second time. Out of 5 I would give it a 2&1/2.

Inside Out 2015 Movie Review

June 18, 2015 By EB

Read Our Inside Out 2015 Movie Review

inside out reviewThe kids and I went to see this on the spur of the moment and when I looked at the characters on the posters I wasn’t sure if this movie was going to be more for very little people than my kids who are aged 8 to 12 at the time of seeing this.

The first five minutes of the movie, I spent laughing my head off and it felt like I was the only one in the cinema doing that, kind of like when we saw Lego Movie where I felt like the only people laughing in the cinema were the group of teenagers sitting next to us, and……me. Come on adults, where is your sense of humor? Simply, this movie was funny and gave the audience ample opportunities to laugh.

Aside from the high laugh factor, I loved the concept of this movie. This was truly an original concept for a kids movie and it will have your children thinking about the different parts of their mind and identifying with how we might function, as humans, from the inside out.

Summary Of Inside Out

Movie Details: 1hr 42min‎ – ‎Rated PG‎ – ‎Animation‎

Inside Out is about a family, their lives and in particular the daughter Riley and the emoticons in her brain. They appear like a judgement panel inside her head. These are portrayed as five characters; one is a red little square guy called ‘Ange;r, another is a optimistic young woman called ‘Joy’, then there is another little skinny character who is ‘Fear’, followed by the green colored glamour girl called ‘Disgust’ and lastly, ‘Sadness’ who is a pudgy girl who is, guess the color – blue! They all have different personalities based on who they are and they come into play depending on what Riley has going on in her life.

The havoc begins when the family moves house and things inside Riley’s brain don’t go as hoped. The characters inside Riley’s brain have to repair ‘neurons’ that are paths to happy places, such as the friendship land, the family land and others. As Riley becomes more depressed about the move, so things are thrown into disarray with ‘joy’ being almost lost. One important lesson is that ‘Joy’ cannot do her job without Sadness but she does not realise this until later in the movie. ‘Sadness’ still serves a purpose and we learn this through the story.

This is such a well executed script and there are bonus characters and ideas that I just didn’t see coming. I won’t tell you who and what they are as I would feel like I am giving away the punch lines.

On the whole, this is a great movie that we will definitely watch again on DVD. We were all nicely surprised that it wasn’t a toddler’s movie. Disney does such a great job these days of making movies entertaining across the ages that most times, when you go along as a parent, you really enjoy the entertainment. So, go see this movie. You won’t be disappointed.

Inside Out Movie Cast

inside out movie castAs much as ‘Joy’ the character in Riley’s head sounded familiar to me, when I saw the cast, I have to say that none of them were actors or actresses I knew. Lewis Black plays Anger, Mindy Kaling plays Disgust, Amy Poehler plays Joy, Bill Hader plays Fear and Phyllis Smith plays Sadness. The voices of these actors were well cast for the characters.

Even though I didn’t know the people behind the characters, it did not detract from the movie. After all, if the voice captures the essence of what is being portrayed then that’s a win.

So, what did you think of the movie? Have you seen it or are you going to see it based on my review? Please comment below.

Paper Planes Movie Review

January 18, 2015 By EB

Paper Planes FilmPaper Planes Movie Details: 96 min‎ – ‎Rated G‎

Paper planes movie was released today 15th January in Australia and the kids were keen to see it. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this movie as I didn’t know much about it, like Big Hero 6 before I went to see it. I was even more surprised to see it was an Australian movie. It’s not hard to pick that Aussie accent in movies so it was a give away at the start, along with some Australian bushland that some of us are very familiar with.

Paper Planes – The Film

This movie was surprisingly good. The cast has some familiar faces, especially if you are familiar with some older Australian TV series. Such actors as Sam Worthington from ‘Water Rats’ and “Avatar” who plays Jack the father and Terry Norris from ‘Cop Shop’ who plays Grandpa. The characters were likable and well acted. The kid that was supposed to be unlikable, WAS unlikable, so credit to him for pulling it off.

The story does have some great funny moments in it and also some tissue moments. When the kids came out they said “how come every movie we see has to have someone that has died in it”. So, a regular cookie cutter style is part of this movie but it is carried off well.

The general gist of the story is that the father and son live in outback Australia, where it’s very remote. This aspect is captured very well at the start of the movie with the imagery and the way the lifestyle is portrayed. The father is suffering depression after the death of his wife and so spends his time wasting life away watching TV or movies and sleeping on the couch, day or night. He hasn’t been working since the death of his wife and while he is at moments, in the moment with his son and encouraging, at other times, he cannot see beyond his depression and lets his son down.

His son, goes to primary school and as a result of a lesson on paper planes, decides to enter the local competition to see if his plane will win. This leads him on to further competitions and a finale. The school scenes are realistic with regular kids behaviour but some unlikely friendships form, showing a better way for kids who struggle with each other and their ego or ‘place’ at this age.

The film moves along easily and there is the nice touch of a young girl who teaches Dylan, the main character, a life lesson in the making of paper planes.

The movie provides possibility, encouragement, hope and anti-bullying messages for the kids and I liked that aspect. I have a feeling this film might spark up a trend for kids to start making paper planes with origami sets as the film does make you want to try making a great paper plane yourself.

Paper planes is a movie I would watch again on DVD for sure. Overall , a very enjoyable movie for children and adults and I encourage you to see it. It’s one of those movies that is definitely G rated for general viewing and what a nice change that is.

I hope you enjoyed my Paper Planes movie reviews. Would like to hear what you think so please comment and share.

House Of Magic Movie Review

January 18, 2015 By EB

This is our honest House of Magic Movie Review

When the kids and I went to see House Of Magic, there were not many kids movies on, so our choices were limited. We couldn’t agree on which movie to see. It was either Box Trolls, which one of my kids had already seen, or it was this and I had to make an executive decision as there were groans and grumbles and there was no group agreement. So, I went in positive, thinking it would be a good choice. So, this is my House Of Magic movie review.

Unfortunately, this movie was a huge let down. My youngest child, who was 7 at the time enjoyed it the most out of all of us but even so, he said it wasn’t the best movie he had seen.

The movie started out well as it was fast paced based on the initial event of a kitten being dumped and his attempt to stay safe. It quickly went down hill from there. I found the sinister character the most enjoyable out of all the characters. Otherwise, the characters were weak and lacked enough substance to make you like them. The toys that came to life were enjoyable but even so, still bland.

The story had potential but it didn’t really take you an a great journey; more a mediocre one. There wasn’t much of a theme like the other movies such as paper planes or big hero 6, where there was an anti-bully message or a positive message about being a geek.

I don’t really have much more to say about this movie except, don’t bother going to see it. Get it out on DVD if you want to see it. It’s light, at times has some funny moments but on the whole, a couch sitting is better than the big screen.

What do you think? Did you see it already and agree or is my House Of Magic movie review too harsh?

Big Hero 6 Movie Review

January 2, 2015 By EB

Big HERO 6 Baymax

When we rolled up to the cinema during the week to see what was on, I was a bit in the dark. Boxing day is usually when a lot of kids’ movies are released and obviously with good reason. If you are a parent reading this then you would be well aware of school holidays and the need to entertain the little home bods. Preferably, with a movie that is not too lame for adults to watch.

So, when I looked up to see that Big Hero 6 movie was screening, I had no idea what it was about except that it was a Disney movie. The kids were keen to see either ‘Big Hero 6’ or ‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very bad Day’ but we had missed the time slot on the Alexander movie. Before seeing previews for ‘Annie’, none of us were interested in that movie either. Penguins of Madagascar was definitely of interest but again, we missed our chance, so Big Hero 6 it was – even if I was a bit unsure and hoping it was not a similar experience to ‘House Of Magic’.

So what did I think of Big Hero 6?

Big Hero 6 movie review from 3 kids and a Mum

Movie Details: 1hr 45min‎ – ‎Rated PG‎ – ‎Animation‎

There was one main thing I loved about this movie, from an adult perspective. It showed kids as nerds who were using their skills to achieve. It encouraged kids to be nerds and had some great self-esteem elements to it.

As far as being an adult who had to sit through a kid’s movie, it was fun. I would rate it up there with Lego Movie. Lego Movie was great but had a bit of a lull in the middle. Big Hero 6 doesn’t have that. It’s pretty much a happening movie from the get go.

Big Hero 6 charactersThe storyline is different but the usual elements are there; the evil guy, the element of surprise (or two), something to pull on the heart strings and some great action. It was a funny movie and if you watched carefully you could see little nuances that made the movie just that little bit special. I did nearly cry on 3 occasions and if you are prone to tears then take some tissues as I guarantee you will need them. My kids also said they felt emotional too in the same places I did.

The animation was very impressive and I enjoyed the movie from start to finish. My kids thought it was a great movie and we all agreed that we wanted to see it again on DVD.

Will there be a sequel? This is something the kids and I talked about after seeing the movie and we all agreed that yes, we think the ending was left open enough for that to happen. However, the movie did not feel unfinished. If there is no sequel then you still felt satisfied with the ending.

So, I have to say that I highly recommend this kid’s movie. You won’t be disappointed. Now, I will sign off by saying “fa a la, la la, la la” with a chuckle. Check out this scene then get in and see this movie. Pass on your own fa a la, la la, la la below.

Hope you enjoyed my Big Hero 6 film review. Always happy to hear about your experience.
