Family Review of the Movie Alpha 2018
Movie Details: 1hr 36min – Rated PG 13
Admittedly, the preview looked good but this was not a movie I was that keen to see, but since there were limited movies on at the time, the kids decided it was the best choice.
The story-line might not have been completely original but the portrayal of it was none-the-less very good. I was nicely surprised how much I enjoyed this movie and it certainly did take you on a journey that was shared by both boy and wolf individually and co-jointly. At times I found this movie captivating. It’s hard not to fall in love with Alpha and you do have that understanding that Wolves too need to survive so are just doing what is natural.
It is a family friendly movie. The one thing I did find quite odd was a ritual that the clan performed on those who were ready to go hunting with those selected for the team. I won’t go into details here as I don’t want to give too much away about the movie but you’ll know what I mean when you see it and I wasn’t happy with the concept and what it taught kids.
There are things to ponder about this movie that may mean it is more insightful than what you see on the surface. Questioning such things as:
Are we all not an Alpha on the inside? A part of us that needs to survive but tended to in a loving and compassionate way? Are we all on our own journey regardless of the ‘clan’ or ‘family’ we are part of. Are we always seeking our way back home? Are we all our own worst enemy at times but need to learn how to adapt? Is it possible that we can be friends with the wild and independent side of us? Hmmmm…..what do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts and you can comment at the bottom of this post.
There was a nice little surprise at the end of the movie that was unexpected and it does have a feel good ending. It did not have the emotional roller coaster as a theme throughout this movie as is sometimes evident in other movies where they want to instill fear, sadness and laughter. It was a lot more balanced but you did identify with the character.
Kids Comments on Alpha The Movie
I took 2 teenagers along and one nearly teen. My youngest who is currently 11, said he felt it was a little slow in places but otherwise enjoyed this movie. My older 2 children (15 and 14 years) said they enjoyed it on the whole and we all started to think about our doggie at home as a result of this movie.
Overall, a much better movie than expected and I do recommend it as a family movie.
